About Chimney Inspection

Buying a home, seeing water stains, or just haven't looked in years? Brickline performs Level 1, 2, and 3 chimney inspections to CSIA and NFPA 211 standards — including full video scans of the flue. Every inspection ends with a written, photographed report you can hand to your insurer, your home inspector, or your historic review board.

Price: $99–$250 · Duration: 1–2 hours

Signs You Need Inspection

  • Buying or selling a home with a fireplace
  • Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the chimney
  • White staining (efflorescence) on exterior brick
  • You've never had the chimney inspected
  • After any chimney fire, storm damage, or nearby construction

Which Level Do You Need?

Level 1 is a visual check for chimneys in regular use with no changes — $99. Level 2 adds a video flue scan and is required by NFPA 211 on any sale of property or after any operating malfunction — $189. Level 3 involves opening up concealed areas when a serious hazard is suspected — quoted after a Level 2, up to $250 for the inspection itself.

Real Estate Deadlines

We hold slots for real-estate inspections and deliver the photographed report the same day — because we know your option period doesn't wait. Priya N. in Bethesda put it best: the photo report caught a cracked flue tile the general inspector missed.

What the Neighbors Say

4.9· 380+ reviews across DC, MD & VA

They matched the mortar on our 1918 rowhouse perfectly. You can't tell where the repair starts. Flat quote, no surprises, brick dust swept off the sidewalk when they left.

L

Laura B.

Capitol Hill, DC

Two other companies told us to tear the chimney down. Brickline rebuilt the top four courses with reclaimed brick and it looks original. Historic review board approved it without a note.

J

James O.

Old Town Alexandria, VA

Sweep and Level 2 inspection before we bought the house. The photo report caught a cracked flue tile the general inspector missed. Worth every dollar of the $250.

P

Priya N.

Bethesda, MD

The $189 sweep is actually $189. Drop cloths everywhere, HEPA vacuum running the whole time, written report with photos before they left. Booking again next fall.

M

Marcus T.

Petworth, DC

Water had been getting into the firebox for two winters. They found the cracked crown in one visit, quoted it flat, and fixed it in an afternoon. Dry ever since.

E

Ellen W.

Silver Spring, MD

No upsells, no scare tactics. The mason who quoted the repointing was the one on the roof doing it. That alone puts them ahead of everyone else we called.

FAQ

Chimney Inspection FAQs

Yes — NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection (with video scan) on any transfer of property. General home inspectors look up the flue with a flashlight; that's not the same thing.
