About Masonry Repair
This is the work Brickline was built on. Our crews are trained masons — repointing, partial rebuilds, and crown work are done in-house, never subcontracted. On pre-war homes we use lime-based mortar matched to your original brick, because hard Portland cement destroys soft historic brick from the inside out. Flat written quote before we touch a brick.
Price: $800–$3,000+ · Duration: 1–3 days
Signs You Need Masonry
- Crumbling or missing mortar joints
- Loose, spalling, or flaking brick faces
- Leaning or visibly tilted chimney stack
- Gaps between the chimney and the house
- Brick fragments on the roof or in the yard
Why Lime Mortar Matters
Pre-1930 DMV rowhouses were built with soft brick and lime mortar that flex and breathe together. Repointing them with modern Portland cement traps moisture and pops the brick faces off within a few winters. We match mortar hardness, color, and joint profile to the original — which is why historic review boards in Capitol Hill, Georgetown, and Old Town approve our work.
Repoint or Rebuild?
If the brick is sound and only the joints have failed, repointing (roughly $800–$1,500 for a typical stack) restores structure and weather-tightness. If brick faces are spalling or courses have shifted, a partial rebuild of the top courses ($1,500–$3,000+) is the honest fix. We'll tell you which one you actually need — and put it in writing.

Reviews
What the Neighbors Say
“They matched the mortar on our 1918 rowhouse perfectly. You can't tell where the repair starts. Flat quote, no surprises, brick dust swept off the sidewalk when they left.”
Laura B.
Capitol Hill, DC
“Two other companies told us to tear the chimney down. Brickline rebuilt the top four courses with reclaimed brick and it looks original. Historic review board approved it without a note.”
James O.
Old Town Alexandria, VA
“Sweep and Level 2 inspection before we bought the house. The photo report caught a cracked flue tile the general inspector missed. Worth every dollar of the $250.”
Priya N.
Bethesda, MD
“The $189 sweep is actually $189. Drop cloths everywhere, HEPA vacuum running the whole time, written report with photos before they left. Booking again next fall.”
Marcus T.
Petworth, DC
“Water had been getting into the firebox for two winters. They found the cracked crown in one visit, quoted it flat, and fixed it in an afternoon. Dry ever since.”
Ellen W.
Silver Spring, MD
“No upsells, no scare tactics. The mason who quoted the repointing was the one on the roof doing it. That alone puts them ahead of everyone else we called.”
